CHECK OUT THE RUMOR MILL ARCHIVES!POSTED 10:00 p.m. EST, April 1, 2006 BLOOM GETS BUFF Although former Colorado receiver/kick returner Jeremy Bloom opted not to run the 40-yard dash at his pro day workout on Saturday, Bloom got the attention of the scouts in attendance by tipping the scales at 184 pounds, up from 173 pounds at the scouting combine in February. Bloom also bench-pressed 225 pounds 19 times on Saturday. In contrast, Iowa linebacker Chad Greenway, who goes 242 pounds and is regarded as a first-round prospect, managed only 16 reps at 225 at the combine -- three less than Bloom. The workout in Los Angeles drew scouts from all 32 teams. Bloom also ran routes, caught passes, and fielded punts. Bloom is expected to be taken in the fourth round of the draft. His perceived potential, and the success of undersized receivers like Santana Moss and Steve Smith, could prompt someone to take a chance on him at the end of the first day. POSTED 9:58 a.m. EST; UPDATED 12:13 p.m. EST, April 1, 2006 PARCELLS RETIREMENT RUMORS FLY Even though the lead item of our annual April Fool's edition regarding the resignation of Cowboys coach Bill Parcells is phony, we're hearing rumors that Parcells might indeed pack it in after three years with the Cowboys. The catalyst for the speculation is the addition of former Eagles receiver Terrell Owens, which might have occurred without the input or over the objection of the head coach. Parcells has said nothing about the arrival of Owens, and Parcells was the only coach who blew off the ownership meetings in Florida this week. His absence has fueled talk that he's very unhappy with the signing of Owens, and that Parcells doesn't want to have to talk about the situation to the media, or to anyone else. The deeper problem here is that the events of the past two weeks have created the impression that Parcells has no say in what goes on with his team. For a guy like Parcells, who plops more football knowledge into the porcelain every day that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones ever will acquire, the notion of being undermined publicly is the last thing he deserves, especially as his coaching career moves into its final days. STRAHAN-ARNOLD FIGHT AN APRIL FOOL'S GAG We've heard from several readers regarding a skirmish that broke out Friday on the set of FSN's The Best Mutherf--kin' Sports Show That Nobody Really Watches Anymore So How Do They Still Get "A" List Guests? On the show, Tom Arnold and Michael Strahan get into an argument that culminates in a Srpinger-style wrestling match. After the two are separated, Strahan complains of a shoulder injury. When we first heard about the incident, we assumed that it was an April Fool's thing. But after watching the video, we're weren't so sure. Vinny DiTrani of the Bergen Record reports that the stunt was indeed an April Fool's set up. Per DiTrani, coach Tom Coughlin and G.M. Ernie Accorsi were given a head's up earlier in the week regarding the phony fracas. As it turns out, Arnold is a far better actor than he previously has shown. And Strahan has a future in Hollywood, too. (If, of course, any casting directors are ever looking for an oversized black man with a slight lisp and bad teeth.) HARRINGTON-TO-CINCY TALK RAISES SIDE ISSUE FOR AGENT Lions quarterback Joey Harrington will either be traded or released. One of the teams in the mix for a trade is the Cincinnati Bengals, who need a solid backup option, especially since Jon Kitna is gone -- and since starter Carson Palmer is recovering from a torn ACL. But Harrington and Palmer are represented by the same agent, Dave Dunn. Harrington wants to be a starter again, eventually. But he'll never be a starter in Cincy, where he'd be stuck behind Palmer. The fact that Palmer is clearly entrenched as the starter will minimize the tensions that might arise if Harrington were brought in to compete for No. 1 with one of Dunn's other clients. Still, it's unusual for the same agent to represent more than one quarterback on the same team's depth chart, and it requires an extra layer of skill for the agent to manage the situation without losing one of them. If the ultimate objective is to make Harrington into a starter again, we don't quite understand why Cincinnati and Miami currently are the two prime candidates to land him. In either city, Harrington would have no chance to start in the short term, barring injury or the inability of the current starters in both towns to bounce back from their current knee problems. But why not target a town in which Harrington would have a year to learn the system before competing for the starting job in 2007? In Minnesota and in Kansas City, the combination of a new coaching staff and a current starter over the age of 35 could equate to a chance to win the job outright next year. Instead, Harrington wants a deal in the neighborhood of $2.5 million to $3 million a year to serve as a backup for the next two seasons, with the goal of competing somewhere for a starting job in 2008. The price tag might force the Fins to look elsewhere, since they prefer to have someone in the program sooner rather than later, and thus don't have the time to wait for Harrington's price tag to fall. The drop-dead date for a trade or a release is June 15, when Harrington is due to receive a $4 million roster bonus from the Lions. THANKS FOR HELPING US TO OUR BEST MONTH EVER Another month has gone by in the offseason, and you've again pushed us to record traffic numbers. In March, we generated more than 55 million hits, nearly 5 million page views, and more than 435,000 unique visitors. So thanks to everyone who has helped us continue to grow. We've come a long way since November 2001, when we scratched together 125,000 total hits. (And we were happy about it at the time.) We're not going anywhere any time soon, so we hope all of our new readers will continue to check in every day, multiple times a day, for all of the latest NFL news, rumors, and analysis. And don't forget to support our sponsors -- most notably our exclusive telecommunications sponsors, Sprint and NEXTEL. SATURDAY ONE-LINERS More empty talk regarding Lord Favre. Reading between the lines as to comments made by Vikings V.P. of football operations Rob Brzezinski regarding the decision not to match the Nate Burleson offer sheet, it sure sounds like the NFL asked the Vikes to let the poison pill pissing match die. But Brzezinski got in one last dig, calling the offer sheet that the Seahawks presented to Burleson "a total sham." WR Marcus Robinson is absent from the Vikings' offseason strength and conditioning program. The Fins have invited more than two dozen draft-eligible players with local ties to visit the team facility. Packers coach Mike McCarthy says that Lord Favre shouldn't worry about who the team is or isn't signing. The 49ers sought and received an extension to their deadline for deciding whether to purchase an Arena League team. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis won't say whether he's thinking about a switch to the 3-4. Center Jai Lewis of George Mason is drawing interest from NFL scouts as a potential defensive lineman. DE Demetric Evans plans to re-sign with the Redskins. Negotiations regarding a possible alteration to the charges pending against Redskins S Sean Taylor fell apart on Friday, and the case is still on track for an April 10 trial; Taylor's lawyers are expected to seek a pre-trial dismissal of the most serious charges. The Texans signed G David Loverne on Friday. The Giants are raising ticket prices by $5. From Ravens owner Steve Bisciotto, regarding criticism of coach Brian Billick and quarterback Kyle Boller on the air waves: "For every person that has an opinion on talk radio, there is somebody driving along 695 totally disagreeing with him. The vocal minority is going to be out there saying Kyle isn't good enough to be a quarterback and Brian isn't good enough to be a coach." The Patriots have signed S Mel Mitchell. The Titans might use their full allotment of 30 pre-draft in-house visits. At least someone is paying attention to the NFL's decision to ban local television from the sidelines. Agent Carl Poston says that LB LaVar Arrington will land with the Dolphins, Giants, Jaguars, or Bengals. (Carl, what happened to the other 16 teams?) Titans G.M. Floyd Reese disputes reports that CB Ty Law will visit the Titans. Titans G.M. Floyd Reese says that QB Steve McNair won't be expected to groom his successor: "A young quarterback can learn a lot from watching a veteran, but it's not like we're asking him to build an extra room onto his house for the young guy," Reese said. "It won't be Steve’s responsibility to groom the young quarterback. The coaches will do that." Raiders coach Art Shell plans to give his new team an attitude enema. (Editor's note: The following stories are phony. They were our annual April Fool's Day edition. The first "real" story appears after the April 1 One-Liners.) POSTED 1:05 a.m. EST, April 1, 2006 TUNA SURPRISE: PARCELLS OUT IN BIG D A league source tells us that Cowboys coach Bill Parcells resigned his position on Friday night after a lengthy meeting with owner Jerry Jones regarding the decision to sign receiver Terrell Owens. Parcells, who signed an extension last season, was angered by the acquisition of Owens. The veteran coach, we hear, told Jones that Owens had not changed and should not be signed. Parcells became livid after Owens' book deal was announced, which happened less than two days after Owens was introduced as a member of the organization. Butch Davis is the leading candidate to replace Parcells. Davis was the Cowboys' defensive coordinator in the early 1990s, and he served with Jimmy Johnson's two Super Bowl teams. For Parcells, his coaching career is likely over after stints as the top dog with the Giants, Patriots, Jets, and Cowboys. NFL WITHDRAWS WILLIAMS SANCTIONS The National Football League soon will formally announce its decision to withdraw the one-year suspension imposed on running back Ricky Williams for his most recent violation of the NFL's drug testing policy. Williams reportedly violated the policy earlier this year. In 2005, he served a four-game suspension for a past violation, following his return from a one-year retirement. A hearing had been scheduled for later this month on the appeal of the suspension. The Dolphins were hoping to have an answer as to Williams' status before the draft. Now, they do. FAVRE HIRES ROSENHAUS There's yet another twist in the ongoing confusion regarding the status of Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Now, Favre will hire a new agent. And the agent, we hear, is Miami-based Drew Rosenhaus. A league source tells us that Favre submitted to the NFLPA on Friday a letter terminating his relationship with Bus Cook. Favre is expected to sign a representation agreement with Rosenhaus after the five-day waiting period passes. The purpose of the move is unclear, since Favre is under contract with the Packers and has expressed no desire to get more money. It's possible that Favre is hoping to play for a team with a better chance of winning in 2006, which he recently has said will be his final NFL season (if, of course, he decides not to retire). CULPEPPER RESPONDS TO CHILDRESS Earlier this week, Vikings coach Brad Childress called out former Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper for his decision to rehabilitate his shredded knee at what amounts to a strip mall in Florida. It was the most recent verbal assault by Childress against the guy the Vikings traded for a second-round pick last month. Though Culpepper has been advised by Dolphins coach Nick Saban to quit talking to the media, Daunte apparently has reached his limit. And then some. Possibly with the help of a little lip loosener known as all-kee-hol. "Brad Childress is an asshole," Culpepper said in e-mail message sent to several media outlets late Friday night. "I know I shouldn't care about what the guy says, but I just get sick of listening to him. I've got enough to worry about right now. The last thing I need to worry about is a coach I never played for acting like a little bitch because he was dumb enough to trade me away for a second-round pick." Yee-ouch. Stay tuned on this one. We have a feeling that Childress won't be able to hold his tongue. EARLY LIST OF COMMISSIONER CANDIDATES HAS A FEW SURPRISES A league source with knowledge of the preferences of seven of the NFL owners has shared with us a list of the preferences of both owners for the position of NFL commissioner. Their lists include a wide variety of candidates, including the usual suspects -- Roger Goodell, Steve Bornstein, Dick Cass. But the lists also include some names that previously have not been mentioned. ESPN's Chris Berman is on five of the lists. Keith Olbermann of MSNBC is on three of them. Former 49ers and Browns president Carmen Policy is mentioned twice. It remains to be seen whether any of these outside-the-box possibilities gain any momentum as the search process unfolds. APRIL 1 (WINK, WINK) ONE-LINERS The Eagles have re-signed WR Freddie Mitchell. USC QB Matt Leinart will do Oklahoma drills at his pro day workout. Bears coach Lovie Smith has signed a four-year, $17 million extension. The Bills have decided to keep WR Eric Moulds, and have increased his 2006 salary by $2 million. If Florida wins the NCAA basketball championship, Ravens quarterbacks coach Rick Neuheisel will pocket $75,000 in the office pool. The Titans have offered the No. 3 overall pick, their second-round selection, their fourth-round selection, and owner Bud Adams' toupee to Houston owner Bob McNair for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Instead of covering up 10,000 seats at AllTel Stadium in order to enhance sellouts, the Jags are covering up all but 10,000 seats in 2006. The Bills are marketing a new line of adult protective undergarments with a team logo that turns green when it's time for a fresh pair. Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith has confessed to a secret man-crush on coach Marty Schottenheimer (and on William Shatner). Chiefs RB Priest Holmes has asked to be moved to defensive back. Falcons QB Mike Vick has settled his herpes case for $1.9 million and a lifetime supply of Valtrex. Rams coach Scott Linehan recently sprained a wrist while waxing Jay Zygmunt's car. The agent for Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren says that the Big Show wants to buy the Seahawks from Paul Allen. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has signed an exclusive endorsement deal with Bacardi. Former Steelers QB Kordell Stewart has signed with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena League for the remainder of the 2006 season. Bengals WR Chad Johnson finally has acknowledged that he took a swing at coach Marvin Lewis at halftime of the team's playoff loss to the Steelers. (Editor's note: If you haven't realized it -- and we feel sorry for your family and co-workers if you haven't -- all of the above stories and one-liners are phony. This is our annual April Fool's edition.) For our entire body of NFL news and information from March 2006, or any other month from the past four years, click here.
